Match Reports
Yendys 37 Copsewood Diamonds 40 - 10/10/09
This was by far the toughest match that the Yendys team has had this season.
Yendys started off well, snatching the lead in the early stages of the match. There was a lot of good fluent play by the Yendys side, which was challenging their opponents from Warwickshire. Copsewood were not going to let the Yendys team have all their own way and they put up a great resistance to the speed of the South Staffs side.
It was a thrilling match throughout. Copsewood came storming back to lead at the end of the 1st quarter by 10 goal to 9.
In the second quarter, it was Copsewood who took an early lead only for Yendys to fight back. Still Yendys could not get in front as they lost the second quarter by 2 goals.
Changes were made to the Yendys line up at halftime and soon after halftime a further change was forced upon them as Captain and Centre Leanne Pearce was too ill to proceed. The introduction of Amelia Mayo to the centre court proved successful as she came up with a number of interceptions. Still the Yendys side could not get their noses in front and found themselves just 1 goal down as they entered the final quarter at 30-31.
The final quarter was a grueling affair; Although Copsewood went farther ahead at the start of this quarter. Yendys appeared to take control and went into a 3 goal lead, but they never looked confident of keeping ahead. In the final few minutes, errors and lack of concentration cost them goals and Copsewood took advantage to go into an unassailable 3 goal lead which is where it ended.
On reflection, this was a tough game for both teams. Yendys need to focus right to the end as basic errors set in the final minutes. Their speed on court was countered by a more physical and close marking game, which caused a lack of concentration at a crucial time.
Yendys can learn from this encounter. It is early days in the season and they can build on this performance.
Yendys 49 Grasshoppers 35 - 03/10/09
The 3rd Regional match of the season saw Yendys Netball Club pitted against their local rivals Grasshoppers.
This match is always very competitive as both clubs have their pride to consider, and this game was no different
Grasshoppers scored the first goal, but this was countered by a quick reply from the Yendys team. Yendys then took control and went in front to take a lead which they maintained until the end.
Yendys changed their line up in the 2nd half by putting fresh legs in the centre court. This did not make an immediate success as the Grasshopper team started to reduce the deficit.
The changes did eventually make their mark and Yendys ran out victors to maintain their unbeaten record for the season.
It is still early days for the team and competition for places is high. With the majority of the squad from last season still available and a couple of new players to the club, the format of the team is not yet settled.
The result is that we have not yet seen the best that this team can do. It could be very interesting to see what happens when the team gels
Yendys 44 Recycles 38 - 26/09/09
In their second Regional match of the season, Yendys Netball Club won a very scrappy game.
After a good performance in week 1, Yendys were expected to gain a good result in week
2 especially as their opponents had been well beaten in their first match.
Things never work out the way you expect. Yendys did take an early lead, but in a match that was noted for individual errors, they never got an unassailable lead.
The speed for which the Yendys side is renowned was not apparent. Too many errors by many players kept interrupting the flow and the confidence was affected. This gave Recycles the chance to fight back and this they did in both halves of the game. After Yendys had led by 6 goals, Recycles came back to level at 20 all.
In the 2nd half, Yendys went into a 5-goal lead but still allowed their opponents to claw back at 34 all. In the final quarter Yendys went away again and were relieved that the final whistle went before Recycles could recover again.
Lucy Elliott made her debut in the second half of the match. She has shown promise in training, but this was not a match in which she could shine. Sylene Finnikin (Goal Shooter) did well in attack as she went for everything, and achieved most.
This was not a good team performance by Yendys, however at the end they were pleased to get the points despite the standard of play.
BAI 44 Yendys 44
Yendys Netball Club started their 2009-10 Regional League Season, with a tough opening game.
Their opponents were BAI who finished 2nd in the table last season and were disappointed not to be promoted.
The match was a close encounter throughout. In the opening minutes there was never more than three goals difference between the teams. Sylene Finnikin and Steph Guy did some good accurate shooting for Yendys but this was countered by similar accuracy by the BAI shooters.
Not to be outdone both defenses stood to their tasks and helped keep the score down to a respectable level.
In the third quarter, Yendys went ahead by 6 goals but never was it certain that the win would be theirs. In the last quarter BAI came storming back to level the scores at 44 all seconds before the final whistle.
This was a good team performance by Yendys, However with a 6 goal lead they can only say that it was a match that they should have won. Basic errors eventually cost them the win they so richly deserved
