History
Yendys Netball Club formed in 1993 and consisted of a a group of ladies form Cannock and Walsall, known then as Sneyd Ladies. Seeking a coach they employed the services of Sandie de Bechi, but soon afterwards asked her to play for them. As Sandie did not wish to wear the caps of both player and coach she asked Syd Smailes to take over.
Sneyd Ladies continued to gain success in the Walsall & District Netball League although changes in players saw them remain a one team club.
In 1996, a trip was organised to Pontins at Hemsby. The party consisted of players from another one team club. Not wishing to use either club's names, one of the group suggested 'Yendys', which is Sydney spelt backwards. The competition saw Yendys just miss out on a place in the cup play-offs and so they had their challenge set for the plate competition. An exciting final saw Yendys clinch the plate title by a goal in the closing seconds of the final and £100 for the funds to boot! As having proved a lucky charm the name Yendys stayed.
One member of the original Sneyd Ladies is still with the club today. Sandie de Bechi is still an active player, coach and committee member. The club today has a revolving playing membership of sixty plus from 10 to 60 years of age and boasts one former England International, Joan Bryan, and several South Staffordshire County Players from when counties completed in the National Counties League. Chairman and Senior Coach, Syd Smailes', claim to fame is having coached ten netball players who have represented England or Wales.
